QCU makes claim to increase casual loading
The increasing number of casual workers in Queensland could soon be benefiting from a landmark claim to increase casual loading. The Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) has made the first claim in 25 years to increase the casual loading rate from 19% to 28.5%. The application before the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) would see casual wages increased by up to $2 per hour.
In support of the union claim, QCU Assistant Secretary, Grace Grace stated 'The 19% casual loading has not changed for over 25 years but during that period unions have won many improved conditions which are currently being withheld from casual workers. The increase is well overdue'.
Ms Grace also stated that she hoped that this claim would help to curb the explosion in the casual workforce in Queensland, dissuading employers from embracing casual employment as a cheap alternative.
The Queensland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI) have absolutely opposed the union claim. |
