A unique relationship exists between nurses and midwives and those people who seek nursing care. The social charter for nursing and midwifery recognises the broad expectations and mutual obligations of nurses and people seeking nursing services.
Community groups and nursing organisations have worked together to develop this social charter. The first Social Charter for nursing and midwifery in Queensland was signed in May 2002 and reaffirmed on International Nurses Day in 2003. The Social Charter was then updated in 2004 in the lead up to International Nurses Day and again in 2007 to include midwifery as well as nursing.
Health needs and expectations change over time. The partners who support the social charter will meet annually to ensure that it is relevant to the needs and expectations of nurses and the community.
