The QNU employs a range of staff to work with our membership to further the interests of nurses and nursing.
The staff of the QNU are organised into teams that cover the various sectors of the Union's membership. Teams meet regularly to discuss issues and problems, plan campaigns and ensure that the membership is effectively represented industrially and professionally. Each team is made up of Organisers, Industrial Officers, Professional Officers and can call on other staff members for assistance as required. A number of staff members participate in the various teams.
Below is a brief description of staff roles and responsibilities.
Industrial staff
Information Officers The Information Officers are the first port of call for most members seeking information from the Union. They handle an enormous range of diverse calls, including general enquiries about wages and working conditions, information on working overseas, how to use grievance procedures, what study assistance is available to members, how to make Freedom of Information applications, through to questions on education, training and professional development - just to mention a few!
This is a particularly busy section of our office and also operates a voicemail system. If you are put through to an Information Officer and they are unavailable you will be asked to leave your name, number, a clear request for information and a suitable time that your call can be returned.
Membership Services Recruitment Officer The Membership Services Recruitment Officer is responsible for dealing with issues associated with recruitment, provides specific advice and assistance to Organisers on recruitment matters, works on recruitment campaigns and develops material to assist with the recruitment of new members. In addition, this officer is responsible for providing up to date information on the break down of union membership and develops strategies specific to the different sectors where the Union has membership to enhance Union coverage.
Organisers The Union currently employs 10 Organisers in the Brisbane area. A further six Organisers are employed to support regional members and are based in Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Toowoomba.
Organisers are responsible for visiting workplaces, recruiting new members, representing members, assisting with the establishment of Union Branches, conducting negotiations with employers and representation as required before various tribunals. Organisers are also actively involved in representing nurses in various forums and on various industrial and nursing organisations.
Industrial Officers Industrial Officers are responsible for representing members before industrial tribunals, negotiating with employers to establish awards and agreements and providing representation for nurses in industrial matters. Major current issues for Industrial Officers include negotiating enterprise bargaining agreements across all sections of the Union's membership.
Professional Staff
Professional Officers The Professional Officers are responsible for liaising with professional nursing organisations, promoting the profession of nursing, promoting nursing as a career and organising and participating in a range of professional development activities for nurses including seminars, training sessions and conferences.
Project Officer The Project Officer is involved in a range of issues, including developing submissions on behalf of the Union (for example, budget submissions to government), organising union campaigns and working with outside organisations on campaigns of significance to the membership, for example, the current campaign for 14 weeks paid maternity leave.
Librarians The QNU Librarians maintain an extensive Library covering a range of subject matters including health, nurses and nursing, industrial relations, human resource management and the economy. The Service is for use by members throughout the State. Click here for more information about the Library Services available to members.
