| Under the rules of the QNU membership is open to all people involved in nursing in Queensland.
Types of Membership
ORDINARY MEMBERSHIP Membership is available for nurses working full-time, part-time and casually, and membership fees are set according to classification and hours worked. In order to be entitled to pay the part-time fee members need to be working 48 hours, or less, per fortnight. Members working in excess of 48 hours per fortnight should upgrade to full membership as you may not be completely covered for Professional Indemnity Insurance.
STUDENT MEMBERSHIP Membership is available to students who are studying nursing at either university or TAFE. Student membership attracts a discount rate and entitles students to receive the journal and provides access to our Library facilities.
Student membership is currently only $3.35 per month! Contact the QNU for details.
Please note:
- If you are a student and are working part-time in nursing, for example, as an Assistant in Nursing in the Aged Care industry, you need to upgrade your membership to the part-time rate as you will not be covered industrially or legally for part-time work.
- Student membership is only available for full-time students who are not engaged in any paid nursing work.
NURSES COVERED BY OTHER UNIONS Membership is available to nurses who are covered industrially by other unions. For example, a nurse working as an academic at a university would be covered industrially by the National Tertiary Education Union, but may wish to retain membership of the QNU for professional reasons and for keeping up to date with the latest developments in nursing. This form of membership attracts a discounted fee and proof of membership of the appropriate industrial union is required.
NURSES WORKING IN BORDER AREAS For nurses who work in both Queensland and another state - click here for more information.
PASSIVE MEMBERSHIP Passive membership is available at a discounted rate for non-practising nurses only. This means that during a period of extended unpaid leave, for example, unpaid maternity leave, nurses can maintain their membership and receive up to date information from the Union without having to pay full membership fees. Click here for more information.
If you have difficulties downloading these application forms, you can contact the QNU on (07) 3840 1444, or if you are outside Brisbane on our toll free number: 1800 177273 and an application form will be sent to you.
Note: Professional Indemnity Insurance Please note that you will be covered by Professional Indemnity Insurance* once the Union has received your signed application form and payment of your dues. Your coverage is determined by your application - that is, if you join as a part-timer, but are working in excess of 48 hours per fortnight you may not be covered. You also need to ensure that if your circumstances change that you advise the union as soon as possible to ensure that your insurance coverage is maintained. * Independent privately practising midwives are not covered by the QNU Professional Indemnity Insurance.
