Seasons Aged Care: Medication management survey

Published: 16 November 2011

In order to address members concerns with medication management, we would be most grateful if you could complete and return the attached short survey.

We have also included a QNU Request for Representation form.

If you have concerns with medication management and feel that you are being forced to provide assistance contrary to the “Carers Provisions” of the Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulation 1996 or the professional standards and guidelines relevant to the aged care industry, please complete this form and return with the survey.

This information will assist us in moving forward with this issue.

Please remember the following steps when assessing whether it is appropriate to assist a resident with their medication.

  1. Has a registered nurse delegated the task to you?
  2. Has the resident been assessed as competent to self-medicate?
  3. Has the resident asked you personally for assistance with the task?
  4. Has the medication been supplied as a dispensed medication for that resident?
  5. Are the directions on the dispensed medication container specific as to route, time, dose and frequency?

If you cannot answer all of the above questions in the affirmative, it is likely to be unlawful, and may breach the Aged Care Standards, for you to give the medication to the resident.
