Peninsula Care: make your vote count
Published: 28 September 2011
The negotiation process for the first enterprise agreement for all Peninsula Care facilities has concluded.
Your QNU negotiation team has achieved as much as possible through discussions with the employer and now it is up to the members to assess the proposed agreement then vote to either accept or reject it.
Thanks must go to the union members from each facility who assisted in the negotiation process and in communicating with nurses during the bargaining campaign.
What next?
The next step in the process is the “access period” when staff can access a copy of the proposed agreement and familiarise themselves with the offer.
This period commenced on Monday 26 September. You cannot vote during this access period. You may cast your vote during the ballot period, which commences on Thursday 6 October and closes at midday on Friday 14 October.
The ballot results will be counted at the Peninsula Aged Care Service facility at 1:30pm on 14 October. A simple majority of the votes will determine whether the agreement is accepted or rejected.
The QNU requires a group of union members to assist with the ballot count. If you are available to assist, please contact QNU organiser Paul Mitchell when he visits your workplace prior to the ballot opening.

Summary of the offer
All the terms and conditions of the Nurses Award 2010 have been maintained.Wages
A wage increase of 5 per cent (based on your pay rate at 30 June 2011) following approval of the agreement. If accepted at ballot, the agreement will be considered made and will be paid on the next pay period following, which will be on 24 October 2011.
(Please note – approximately 3.4 per cent has already been passed on to staff from the Australian Fair Pay Commission on 1 July 2011).
There will be a further increase of 5 per cent of your current pay rate on the first anniversary of the making of the agreement.
If, in 2012, the Fair Pay Commission gives increases that are higher rates than those in the agreement, the higher rate shall apply.
Other improvements
- The option to cash out annual leave.
- The option to cash out long service leave.
(These are only ever done on a voluntary basis on the individual request by the employee.)
- Retention of pre-existing nursing classifications common to the aged care industry in Queensland.
- Due to changes to registration titles by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, there will be a change to enrolled nurse classifications. ENs with a medication endorsement are now titled as “EN” and ENs without a medication endorsement are titled as “EN with a notation without medication administration rights”. This has no effect to your pay rates.
