Professional Indemnity Insurance
Professional indemnity insurance cover is a significant benefit for financial members of the QNU.
Members of the QNU who are undertaking nursing and midwifery work are covered by professional indemnity insurance of up to $5,000,000 per claim ($10,000,000 in the aggregate)*.
This is the most cost effective way for nurses and midwives to ensure their coverage at work.
Provided that the member is financial at the time of the incident, and maintains their financial status, they are covered by the QNU’s professional indemnity insurance policy.
Here’s what the policy covers
This civil liability professional indemnity insurance policy covers claims against negligence and other civil claims that arise from a breach of duty connected with a nurse’s or midwife’s practice. It does not cover members for criminal matters alleged against them.
There are some common types of claims covered by the policy:
- negligence claims made against a member in connection with their practice as a nurse/midwife;
- where a member is summoned to give evidence before a Coronial Inquest;
- defamation claims made against a member in connection with their work;
- “Good Samaritan acts”, for example, where a nurse provides nursing, life saving or life extending services rendered gratuitously at the scene of a medical emergency or during voluntary community service.
*Professional indemnity insurance excludes midwives in independent practice.
