The 28th annual conference of the Queensland Nurses Union (QNU) is being held over the next three days – 22, 23 and 24 July 2009 - at the Sebel Citigate Hotel, cnr Turbot and Roma Streets, Brisbane.

More than 210 delegates, representing more than 38,000 nurses from hospitals, community health facilities and aged care facilities throughout Queensland, will discuss a range of industrial relations, health and political issues.

This year’s conference will also provide a launching pad for the next stage of the Australian Nursing Federation’s national aged care campaign – Because We Care: Quality care for older Australians – aimed at making the 2010 federal budget the Aged Care Budget.

To-date the Because We Care campaign, which was launched in March this year, has involved television and newspaper advertising and workplace visits aimed at organising aged care nurses into effective community campaigners.

This second stage, which will be launched by ANF federal secretary, Ged Kearney, involves aged care nurses lobbying their local federal politicians to ensure next year’s federal budget becomes the aged care budget, providing significant funding increases and policy reform in the aged care sector. This lobbying will involve postcard and letter writing and electorate visits to MPs by aged care nurses.

Delegates will also hear reports on Queensland’s response to the growing Swine Flu (H1N1 2009) presence in Australia and what the impact could be for nurses, public and private health services and aged care services.
