New Chief Nursing & Midwifery Officer for Qld

Published: 3 January 2012

The Queensland Nurses Union (QNU) looks forward to working with Queensland’s new Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Dr Francis Hughes, to continue to advance the interests and values of our members, QNU secretary, Beth Mohle, said today.

Ms Mohle was responding to today’s State Government announcement of Dr Hughes’s appointment, which will take effect in March 2012.

Ms Mohle said the QNU was instrumental in getting this important position established in Queensland many years ago and we have worked very closely with this important office.

“Since 2005 we have worked collaboratively with Queensland Health’s nursing and midwifery leadership, using an interest-based, problem solving approach, to address the challenges confronting the professions of nursing and midwifery. This is vital work if we are to meet the increasing health needs of our community.

“We continue to use this approach to our current negotiations for a new enterprise bargaining agreement, which will replace the current agreement that is due to expire on 31 March 2012.

“I would also like to acknowledge the good work of Cheryl Burns, the current Acting Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, and thank her for the commitment and leadership she has shown while acting in this important role.

“Nurses and midwives make up the bulk of Queensland’s clinical workforce, in both the private and public sectors. So the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer has a huge responsibility in terms of the clinical workforce and meeting community needs and expectations,” Ms Mohle said.
