Submission to the Weapons Act Review: Discussion Paper Draft Weapons Bill 2010; and Draft Weapons Regulation 2010
Published: 8 September 2010
The Queensland Nurses' Union (QNU) welcomes the opportunity to provide a submission to the Weapons Act Review. Our submission addresses the proposed legislative changes recommended by the Ministerial Weapons Act Review Committee to the Weapons Act 1990.
We have noted that a number of these changes are in relation to knives and bladed weapons and offences relating to the possession of the aforementioned items in public places.
Nurses are often exposed to members of the public who seek treatment whilst in possession of knives and bladed weapons, often these people are under the influence of drugs or alcohol and often both.
In this submission we initially provide information on the QNU followed by our views in relation to the proposed changes.
Furthermore, we will also cite examples of recent scenarios described to us around nurses being subject to threats from people accessing treatment through Health care facilities.
