Is it Fair?

Support Union Aid Abroad’s
Make Life Fair Everywhere campaign

·           Seven out of ten of the world’s poorest people are women

·           Teachers in developing countries earn as little as $4 a week.

·           Every year more than 2 million people die from unsafe work.

·           Millions of people are forced to work against their will

These are some of the truths about the world in which we don’t live – the developing world. The world we live in is a different world – and not without its injustices ‑ but for hundreds of millions of people, everyday life is a struggle against inequities, human rights abuses, unfair working conditions and lack of access to life’s basic necessities. The question is, IS IT FAIR?

Union Aid Abroad, the humanitarian aid agency of the ACTU believes that we can all act to make the world a fairer place.

The Make Life Fair Everywhere campaign is a national campaign by Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA to raise awareness of the need for union people in Australia to show international solidarity and support for people in developing countries.

The Make Life Fair Everywhere campaign recognises the need for international solidarity within the Australian union movement

“It is no longer possible to protect workers’ rights in one country, while in neighbouring countries with whom we trade, workers face exploitation and sweatshop conditions. The fight for workers’ rights in one country has to be a fight for workers’ rights in every country.

I urge you to do your part and support Union Aid Abroad -APHEDA’s Make Life Fair Everywhere campaign.”

Sharan Burrow, ACTU President

Union Aid Abroad is facing difficult times. Over the past 6 years, Union Aid Abroad has seen its federal government funding reduced from over $3 million to approximately $350,000, that’s cut of 90%!

Through the Make Life Fair Everywhere campaign, Union Aid Abroad is hoping to strengthen its relationship with individual union members. They are aiming to get 5,000 people registered as monthly donors (Global Justice Partners) by September this year.

ANF launches appeal for East Timor nurses

The Australian Nursing Federation has launched an appeal to assist nurses in East Timor in the wake of recent upheaval in the country.

Madalena Soares, a nurse in East Timor and a member of the East Timor Nurses Association, Associacao Dos Enfermeiros Timor Lester (AETL) recently wrote to ANF federal secretary Jill Iliffe outlining the distressing situation facing nurses.

‘Nurses bring their families with them to the hospital in the hope that food will be available for everyone but the hospital only provides one plate of food for each nurse. Some nurses have already left workplaces to go to refugee camps. We need some help to encourage them to stay and to make sure they are safe,’ she said.

ANF assistant federal secretary Gerardine (Ged) Kearney said the ANF is appealing to Australian nurses to help the AETL provide both emergency relief to individual nurses affected by the conflict in East Timor and to help rebuild infrastructure.

‘We have a long standing commitment to the nurses of East Timor who again face a difficult and distressing situation. Madalena’s story highlights the difficulties facing nurses and we want to respond quickly to offer relief from hunger and to keep nurses working in the hospitals.’

The appeal is being coordinated in partnership with Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA. Donations can be made by calling the toll free number 1800 888 674 and telling the operator the donation is for the East Timor Nurses appeal, or by visiting the website»

About APHEDA

Justice and Solidarity
A commitment to justice and human rights is the cornerstone of the work of Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA, the ACTU's overseas aid organisation. Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA was established in 1984 by the ACTU in recognition of the union movement's responsibility to contribute directly to countries and regions of the world where men and women workers are disadvantaged through poverty, a lack of workplace / human rights and civil conflict.

Self-reliance, not charity
Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA's international program has developed from a rights based approach. Our work aims to build self-reliance through support to educational and training projects for workers and their organisations. Over 50 training projects, working through 40 separate project partners in 15 countries assist many different communities in Southeast Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East, Southern Africa and the Caribbean.

Union Based
Support for these projects comes from many individual union members throughout Australia, the ACTU, unions and workplaces, as well as from the Australian government aid agency, AusAID.
