The Queensland Nurses’ Union has today criticised management of Mater Private South Brisbane and Redlands for their desperate efforts to force nurses onto a non-union agreement using the unfair WorkChoices legislation before it is repealed by the new federal government.

If the Queensland Liberal Party leader, Dr Bruce Flegg, is so concerned about budget problems at the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH), he should get on the phone to his federal colleagues, Prime Minister John Howard and Health Minister Tony Abbott, and reprimand them for holding back $287 million in federal funding for the PAH, the Queensland Nurses Union (QNU) said today.

Members of the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) have expressed concern about statements made in the media recently and by the Secretary of the ANF WA Branch about the intentions of the ANF to change its structure from a federation of independent state branches to a national union and that Branches of the ANF are being forced to financially contribute to the ACTU campaign against the WorkChoices legislation against the wishes of Branch Councils.

In a major intervention into the federal election campaign, the Queensland Nurses Union (QNU) will tomorrow (31 August) launch a four-week, $500,000 Statewide television advertising campaign outlining the negative impact of the Howard Government’s industrial relations laws (the so-called WorkChoices) on nurses. This is the first such advertising campaign ever run by Queensland nurses.

The Health Minister, the Director General, the General Managers of Central and southern areas, Emergency Department Nurses from the south east, the Secretary and other officials of the QNU met for an urgent meeting on Tuesday, 31 July to address the growing crisis in emergency departments across Queensland.

The Australian Government should object in the strongest possible terms to the current Fijian Government’s policy of cutting nurse pay by five per cent, the NSW Nurses Association (NSWNA) said today.

Queensland workplaces have until the end of the month to enter the 2007 Work Safe Awards.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Awards, run by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, showcase the achievements of companies, individuals and organisations doing their bit to help improve the safety of their workplaces.
