The QNU provides financial members with access to a comprehensive legal service, covering you no matter what legal issue confronts you in either your professional practice, workplace or personal life.

For matters linked with your workplace and/or professional life, including registration and coronial matters, the QNU employs officers with extensive experience who can represent financial QNU members in all matters related to your employment (click here)

For all other matters, including wills, family law and personal injury claims, there is QNU LegalPlus.

QNU LegalPlus’ free legal service—for your personal and family legal needs

QNU LegalPlus is a benefit of your QNU membership, providing financial QNU members and their immediate family with access to free and discounted legal services.

Too often the QNU is contacted by members who have had bad experiences when they have sought help from a lawyer for their personal non-workplace related legal matters.  Poor service, expensive legal fees and a lack of understanding of the issues facing nurses, midwives and AINs are common complaints from members.

QNU LegalPlus makes legal services more accessible and affordable for QNU members and their families.  It simplifies the search for legal advice  and is aimed at ensuring you receive timely, cost-competitive personal and family legal advice from a carefully selected panel of law firms.

Through a competitive tender, the QNU has established a panel of four firms who can provide you with a wide range of personal and family legal services. These firms employ expert lawyers in a broad range of areas of law and have a strong history of representing working people and their unions. They understand how important it is that working people, like you, have access to affordable, high quality legal services for their everyday legal needs.

QNU LegalPlus provides financial members with:

  • one free, untimed, initial consultation* with a lawyer to provide advice to on a legal issue;
  • a free will service;
  • discounted legal fees should the member retain the firm to represent them if their legal issue cannot be resolved in the initial free consultation#

QNU LegalPlus gives financial members access to expert lawyers in the areas of:

How do I access QNU LegalPlus?

If you need legal advice from QNU LegalPlus you should complete the QNU LegalPlus Referral Form.  You can print it out and fax it to the QNU or complete the form online.  We will then forward the request to one of the QNU’s law firms that specialises in your issue. The QNU LegalPlus law firm will then contact you within 48 hours*.

You must complete a Referral Form in order to access QNU LegalPlus. QNU LegalPlus will not assist you without having received a completed referral form from the QNU.

* A reading fee may be charged in circumstances where significant amounts of documentation are required to be reviewed prior to the consultation.

# The QNU does not pay for matters referred to QNU LegalPlus firms. All cost and expenses incurred by members who engage a QNU LegalPlus firm must be met by the member in accordance with the terms of the client agreement between the QNU LegalPlus and the member.

^ The QNU does not provide any warranty or guarantee in relation to the legal services provided by QNU LegalPlus firms. Members are encouraged to obtain quotes in relation to any legal services they require, including from firms other than QNU LegalPlus recommended firms.

Any complaints in relation to the service provided by QNU LegalPlus firms should be sent to the Secretary, QNU, raised with the firm or assistance should be sought from the Legal Services Commission.

For employment related matters, contact your QNU

The QNU employs officers (including industrial officers) with extensive experience representing members in all matters related to your employment.  If you need advice and representation in relation to an employment matter, such as disciplinary action, termination, discrimination, grievances, wage claims or contract reviews, you should contact QNU Connect or complete a Member Request for Representation form.

WorkCover Claims

If your have suffered an injury at work, the QNU can provide you with assistance on applying for workers compensation, appealing a WorkCover decision to QCOMP, appealing a QCOMP decision to the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission and everything to do with the statutory claims process.  If you need advice on a workers compensation claim, you should contact QNU Connect or complete a Member Request for Representation form.

AHPRA/NMBA matters

We know there a few things more distressing in your professional life than to have a complaint made against you to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Financial members of the QNU have access to immediate and expert legal assistance by lawyers who specialise in professional registration, conduct and discipline law.

The QNU retains the services of lawyers who have expertise in all matters related to the professional registration of nurses and midwives. The QNU panel of lawyers provide advice and/or representation on a range of legal and professional issues, including:

  • Notifications (complaints) to the NMBA.
  • Problems with applications for registration, renewal and re-entry.
  • Professional misconduct charges, including hearings in the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT).
  • NMBA investigations.
  • Appeals to the QCAT against NMBA decisions.

Legal representation is only provided to QNU financial members.
