The new QNU Council has well and truly settled in and is now in the process of reviewing the QNU’s strategic plan. The Council is responsible for overseeing the implementation of this plan which broadly defines the Union’s work.

As part of our commitment to achieve the objectives contained in the current 2007-2009 strategic plan a regular, transparent reporting framework for Council was established to enable us to clearly track our progress.

The areas of greatest interest to members and to the life of our Union—the industrial, professional, social, political and democratic areas—are reported to the QNU Council through quarterly reports. These reports contain key activities as well as progress measured against the objectives outlined in the strategic plan.

Regardless of changes to the 2009-2011 strategic plan, the quarterly reports, along with our annual reports, will continue to be produced.

Annual Conference

The work of our Union going forward is also dictated by our Annual Conference, which is responsible for the formulation of policy governing the QNU. Conference, to be held this year from 22-24 July, is an important democratic opportunity for the elected delegates who attend and put forward resolutions on behalf of branch members.

If you’re a delegate and you haven’t received or returned your conference papers please call the QNU as soon as possible.

Branch elections

Along with feeding into the development of the Union’s policies at Annual Conference, QNU branches promote and support member participation, consultation and communication at the workplace level. Branch elections, which are held every two years, are to be conducted later this year. Keep an eye out in the next journal for more information.

Strong branches give QNU members a powerful collective voice that’s difficult to ignore.

Membership fees

To ensure our Union is best placed to continue to promote and defend the interests of members, Council has determined to slightly increase membership fees for the coming financial year.

This will enable the QNU to provide adequate levels of services and assistance to meet demand from members. The decision to increase membership fees is not one taken lightly, however it is in the best interests of members that we have the resources and the capacity to face significant upcoming challenges head-on.

The QNU thanks you for your continued membership of our Union.
