Our Union is in good hands

Published: 7 December 2010

The results of the 2010 QNU Council elections are now known. Congratulations to all elected and re-elected Councillors, in particular Sally-Anne Jones, who has been elected unopposed to succeed me as President, and Stephen Bone, who will step up as Vice President.

The new QNU Council will be in place for two years from January 2011. Our Council is responsible for managing the affairs of our Union. Council ensures the QNU is well placed to meet the industrial, professional, social, political and democratic interests and values of members by overseeing the implementation of Annual Conference decisions.

A number of Branch elections will also be under way shortly and I encourage you to vote when required. Branches are the building blocks of our Union’s democratic structure. Branches promote membership participation, consultation and communication and ensure better outcomes in the workplace. If you don’t have a Branch in your workplace then I encourage you to think about establishing one, regardless of the sector you work in.

Active members in the QNU’s Branches and Council are the lifeblood of our Union. When we act collectively for shared interests and values we have the power to make a real difference. I have witnessed first-hand the power we have when we work together and am constantly amazed by the results we achieve.

As my role as President comes to an end I am assured our Union is in good hands.

I trust we will continue to grow as a strong, relevant and highly respected Union. As long as we are active and continue to work together, we can’t go wrong.
